negativity is not attractive.

By tara gentile on 04/20/2010

here’s a little rant and hopefully some useful information about the power of positivity and the detriment of negativity. you can also access the video here.

p.s. i’m convinced that youtube’s goal is to pick a first frame that makes me look either intoxicated or sleep-deprived. enjoy.

You hit the nail on the head with this one Tara. Negativity is such a turn off for people. I have my negative moments like every one else, but its important not to let it show online.

Absolutely awesome. Particularly about customers. I think folks must not realize that what they say online is out there … forever … searchable via google.

I like how you said you’re cloudy sometimes…me too. I like that way of saying it…hehe…even foggy at times :) Great video – thanks for the advice. I’m all for positivity, it just makes us all happier people at the end of the day.

Great great post Tara! I have been struggling time after time with it, especially when dealing with some hard – to -deal clients – but i try, really try, to get away from negativity and always show the best side. After all, that’s what they remember, no?

I totally agree! Also, it’s part of the working environment you are creating as an indie biz. Your friends and customers on Twitter, FB, your blog or other virtual environments become your workmates, and I think it’s important to think about what kind of a setting you are creating for them too. As an independent, we have the chances to create our own corporate culture, and not simply copy what we see in the corporate world.

I loved the ‘reminder’ about negativity towards ‘difficult’ customers….I feel like some of my colleagues forget at times, that these folks are paying our bills!…if not for ALL of the customers ( high maintenance or not) it’s important to remember that if not for them, we would not have a business….I repeat that mantra to myself when I feel as if someone is going to make me tear my hair out….just see ‘em surrounded in light and gratitude for the life they allow me to have…it helps!

Thanks, Tara, for saying what needs to be heard. It’s wise advice like this that makes me stop and assess how I run some part of my own biz. I make a very honest effort to keep negativity at a minimum while admitting that I’ve made some PR mistakes of my own. We must remember mistakes and failures are opportunities to learn and grow. We’re all human and mistakes will happen. Should you slip up, you can do one of two things. 1, Nothing or 2, damage control. It’s not a fun part of PR but, like CPR, it is a good skill set to have that we hope we never have to use!

Could not agree with you more! I’m always surprised when I witness this on social media sites, for example. I know you should stay personable, but not too personal.
    Love this vid.

I sing of the co-ed so lovely and fair
The kind that one often descries
She is somewhat strong-minded,
and short is her hair
And she wears glasses over her eyes.
