Small Victories

By tara gentile on 06/11/2010

As a small business owner, I’m acutely aware that big things come from small victories. Big things also come from small defeats but that’s a post for another day.

Identifying a small goal, taking the necessary actions, and then celebrating your accomplishments, when repeated, gets you closer to making a dream a reality. In the age of social media, you can easily find support & accountability for your small goals.

What small victory are you celebrating today?

Thanks to your WordPress for Indie Biz stream, you gave me the confidence to successfully go into the CSS Editor panel for my blog and hack away! Still tweaking some, but small victories, right?? :)

    Hey Tara!

Today I’m celebrating that (while it’s a mess and there is so much work to be done) my blogs have finally merged and I feel like a huge weight is off my shoulders!

    And you!?

I am celebrating participating in my first River Arts District Artist Studio Stroll (Asheville, NC) in a studio of MY VERY OWN!

There is much work left to be done today to be prepared for guests tomorrow, but it is victory to be selling my art in my own space!

Oh…and are you going to be in Asheville, NC this weekend (June 12 & 13)? Come say hi at 375 Depot Street!

dawn, that’s awesome! congratulations! i’m sure you see every little imperfection in your studio – but just remember that your guests will be as thrilled as you are to see your work in your own space.

have a great time! and many sales to you!

I showed up at a local networking event this week and 1/2 the people there has either heard of my sweets or had them at some point! Although most of my business is online, it has been fun developing local fans.

My small victory came out of participating in your free wordpress video workshop yesterday. Although I am familiar with wordpress and all its technicalities, that session finally made me set up wordpress on my web host. I am now in the customizing stage! Thank you!

I’ve been a lurker on your blog for months, but this post tempted me to reply… because I’ve been selling my artwork online from the privacy of my home due to my very reclusive nature.
So this week I finally printed some of my designs on T-shirts and forced myself to purchase groceries and run errands while wearing them… thus quietly promoting myself to my entire neighborhood.
One day, I’ll make a giant step (into a boutique or gallery) to say “hello” … but right now, being seen in public and having to answer questions when people comment on my shirt is intimidating enough. :)
Small victory indeed. But worth celebrating.

    I love your blog,
    - (another) Tara

good for you, tara! putting your work “out there” is difficult for just about everybody (never forget that…) and making that leap is a victory for sure.

I ran into a friend last weekend (and actually my first customer via my online store!) and we discussing doing a trunk show/shopping party at her new spa / yoga space. I finally emailed her about it yesterday and things are coming together quickly for what should be a great event on a Saturday afternoon in a major shopping area! So excited, this will be a great promotion for both of our businesses!

today I’m celebrating the fact that yesterday I shut down the computer (literally shut it down) for the first time in over a week – and took my 5 y.o to the part. No guilt what -so -ever. Yay!

My small victory for today is simply that my husband is home from his business trip! He’s home for a full two weeks before he leaves again. So I’ve got some serious time for work and production while he’s here to help with the kids. I love the freedom that us both working for ourselves brings us.

Here’s to an incredibly productive and super fun two weeks!

I’ve had on my to do list for quite awhile to take “real” pictures (versus the digital images of the designs) of some of my invitations to update my listings on Etsy. Today, it is DONE!

Today I talked to a shop owner who is closing her shop because she’s moving about me taking over. Thanks to my twitter friends I didn’t chicken out. Now the shop owner & I are looking into the opportunity!

I tweaked my blog and gave it more colors.

And I got assertive with my camp art supply madness — I’ve recycled a lot of the clutter and I’m a lean machine ready for action.

Celebrating writing posts inspired by my ever increasing conceptual list! Oh, a straight line never felt so good, then when crossing an item off that list! Also offering snaps, applause and confetti to spending time with family and a much needed afternoon nap (it’s the little things)!

I get mega focused on “completing” and “actualizing ideas” that I often forget to celebrate the small steps – even though I know those steps lead to the now (thanks eckhart for the power of now).

thanks tara for for the post – today :)

I’m celebrating the fact that I finally have an idea about postage rates, insurance and customs for opening my etsy shop. On the face of it this sounds like a very silly thing – and duh, why the big fuss? Well, this is a big deal as I have to conduct all my everyday stuff in a language I hardly speak – I’m trying, really hard, but it makes the simple stuff ten times harder. But now I am officially one step closer to opening the shop

My victory is my first blog post! It’s nothing special and I need to keep tinkering with it to make the images in the sidebar show up but I’ve been wanting to do it for a while and it feels good to have it up. Yay!

thank u for this reminder to celebrate small victories!
i’m in the midst of making my new cd and it seems like it’s going so slow and i worry about it too much rather than looking at the small victories that get accomplished daily.

i made a new necklace and earrings using precious metal clay this weekend, which is very new to me. :)

And she wears glasses over her eyes.
